Why GIF is still everywhere
GIF's technical limits are real: a 256-colour palette per frame, lossless LZW compression that's inefficient by modern standards, and only on/off transparency. By every measure, PNG beats it for stills and video formats beat it for motion.
What keeps GIF alive is reach and behaviour. A GIF auto-plays, loops, has no sound, needs no player and embeds in chats, docs, emails and forums that won't take a real video. That social convenience — not its technology — is why it endures.
GIF vs video
For anything longer than a couple of seconds, a real video (MP4 or WebM) is dramatically smaller and sharper than the equivalent GIF. Many "GIFs" you see online are actually short videos dressed up to behave like one. Convert a clip to GIF only when you specifically need the GIF behaviour somewhere video isn't allowed; keep it short to keep the file sane.
