MKV vs MP4: The Archivist's Container vs the One That Just Plays

MKV and MP4 aren't really competing for the same job. MKV is the container for keeping everything: every audio track, every subtitle language, chapter markers, the works. That's what makes it the natural choice for archiving and complete film copies. MP4 is the container for handing a file to a device you can't vouch for and having it just play. If you're building or storing a careful copy, keep it as MKV; the moment it needs to reach a browser, an iPhone, a smart TV or an unknown player, convert to MP4 and accept that some of MKV's extras won't come along for the ride.

MKV and MP4 sit at opposite ends of the same trade-off: how much a container tries to hold versus how confidently it can guarantee that what it holds will actually play. Matroska (MKV) was built with essentially no ceiling — any codec, any number of audio tracks, any number of subtitle languages, chapters, attached fonts, all in one file. MP4 took the narrower, more disciplined path: a smaller, well-understood set of codecs that manufacturers agreed to support everywhere, in exchange for near-universal playback.

A container with no real ceiling

A container's job is to bundle tracks together and label them; the codec inside does the actual compression. MP4 was designed around a deliberately narrow set of codecs everyone could agree to support. MKV was designed around the opposite idea: put no restriction on what can go inside at all. One MKV file can carry the main video track, half a dozen audio tracks in different languages, a dozen subtitle tracks, chapter markers for skipping between scenes, and even attached font files so styled subtitles render correctly, all as one self-contained package. For anyone assembling a definitive copy of something, that flexibility isn't a nice-to-have, it's the entire point.

The archivist's case for MKV

This is why MKV is the format of choice for high-quality archival rips, fansubbed releases and anyone building a careful, feature-complete copy of a film or series: it is the one container that doesn't force you to choose which audio track or which subtitle language makes the cut. Keep the original-language track and three dubs, keep the director's commentary, keep forced and full subtitle tracks side by side: MKV just holds them. It's also open and royalty-free, and it underpins WebM, which is essentially a constrained, web-safe subset of the same underlying format.

Where that flexibility runs into hardware

The same open-endedness that makes MKV powerful for archiving is exactly what makes it unreliable everywhere else. Because an MKV can contain almost anything, a simple hardware player, a smart TV or a phone has no guarantee it recognises what is actually inside — and plenty simply refuse the file outright, or play the video while silently dropping the subtitles or the second audio track. Native browser support is patchy in the same way: Chrome plays MKV directly, Safari does not support the container at all, and Firefox only gained support from version 145 onward. Outside a browser, dedicated media players and desktop software generally handle MKV well; it is specifically the web, plus a lot of consumer hardware, where the format struggles.

What actually gets lost converting MKV to MP4

Converting to MP4 trades that flexibility for certainty, and it's worth being honest about what doesn't survive the trip. MP4 has no good native home for the subtitle formats MKV commonly carries (SRT, ASS or PGS), so a straightforward conversion typically keeps the video and picks a single audio track, leaving extra language tracks and subtitle tracks behind rather than attempting to force them into a container that doesn't handle them gracefully. Chapters and attached fonts don't carry across either. What does survive intact is the thing people usually care about most: the picture and the main soundtrack. If you need the extra tracks and subtitles preserved, keep the MKV as your archive copy and only convert a version for playback when a specific device needs it.

None of this is a quality problem with the video itself — a well-encoded MKV and a well-encoded MP4 can look identical, because quality comes from the codec and bitrate, not the container. The loss, where there is one, is entirely about which extra tracks make the journey, not how sharp the picture looks.
