How MP3 shrinks sound
MP3 uses perceptual coding: a psychoacoustic model predicts which sounds the ear won't actually notice — quiet tones masked by louder ones, frequencies at the edge of hearing — and spends fewer bits, or none, on them. A bitrate setting controls the trade-off; 320 kbps is near-transparent, while lower bitrates save space at growing cost to quality.
Because it discards information, MP3 is lossy: you can't convert a low-bitrate MP3 back to full quality, and re-encoding one MP3 as another compounds the loss. For archiving, a lossless format like FLAC keeps everything; for listening and sharing, MP3's size and compatibility usually win.
Why MP3 endures
Newer codecs — AAC, Opus, Ogg Vorbis — beat MP3 on quality-per-byte, and streaming has made owning audio files less common. Yet MP3 persists for the same reason JPEG does: near-universal support. Every phone, car stereo, browser and cheap player understands it, and its core patents have expired, so nothing stands in the way of using it.
