Why your iPhone photos are HEIC, and why nothing else opens them
Since iOS 11 in 2017, iPhones and iPads have saved photos as HEIC whenever the camera is left on its default High Efficiency setting. The format roughly halves the storage each picture takes, which is great until you try to use the photo somewhere else. Lots of websites reject the upload, older editors don’t recognise it, and on Windows you need a codec from the Microsoft Store before File Explorer will even show a thumbnail.
JPEG has none of those problems. Every site, printer, email client and app has understood it for nearly thirty years, so once a photo is a .jpg you can upload, print or email it without a second thought.
What the conversion does to the picture
Morphr decodes the HEIC and re-encodes it as JPEG in your browser. Nudge the quality slider down if you want a smaller file; at the top setting the result is hard to tell from the original. One detail worth knowing: HEIC can store a wider range of colour and brightness than JPEG, so a very high-contrast shot might look a touch flatter — for ordinary photos you won’t see it.
Good to know
- Want JPEGs straight from the camera? Switch Settings → Camera → Formats to “Most Compatible”.
- Location and camera EXIF data is dropped in the conversion, so the JPEG won’t carry the GPS coordinates the original had.
- Drop a whole album at once and Morphr hands back a single ZIP.
The private way to turn HEIC into JPEG
With Morphr, the whole conversion runs inside your browser tab using your browser's built-in decoder, so your file is never uploaded to a server, queued, or stored. That makes it a safe choice for personal photos, scanned documents and anything you'd rather not hand to a third party.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert HEIC to JPEG?
- Drop your HEIC file onto the converter above (or click to browse), and Morphr converts it to JPEG right in your browser. When it's done, click download — there's nothing to install and no account to create.
- Does converting to JPEG lose quality?
- JPEG is a compressed format, so you can trade a little quality for a smaller file using the quality slider.
- Does converting HEIC to JPEG remove EXIF and GPS data?
- Yes. Re-encoding the image to JPEG drops the embedded EXIF, GPS location and camera metadata, so the file you download carries none of those hidden details. If you'd rather keep a file's exact pixels but strip its metadata in place, use the Inspect tool instead.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so your HEIC file never leaves your device.
