HEIC vs JPEG: Why iPhone Photos Won't Open Everywhere

HEIC is roughly half the size of JPEG at the same quality, which is exactly why Apple made it the default. But JPEG is the format to convert to the moment a photo needs to leave an Apple device.
Neither format is objectively 'better': HEIC squeezes more into less space and stores things JPEG can't, like Live Photo motion and wider colour, while JPEG trades that efficiency for something HEIC still can't match: near-universal compatibility with three decades of software, hardware and printing services.
If you've ever had a photo refuse to upload, or opened a folder of pictures from an iPhone to find grey placeholder icons instead of thumbnails, you've met the HEIC-versus-JPEG problem first-hand. It isn't a bug or a corrupted file. It's two formats with genuinely different priorities colliding.
Since iOS 11 in 2017, iPhones and iPads have saved photos as HEIC by default. JPEG, meanwhile, has been the universal photo format since 1992. Understanding why Apple made the switch, and why so much of the world hasn't followed, explains both the appeal of HEIC and the recurring hassle of using it anywhere outside Apple's ecosystem.

Why Apple chose HEIC
HEIC wraps a still image compressed with HEVC (H.265), the same video codec Apple uses for 4K recording, inside a HEIF container. HEVC's compression is considerably more advanced than the DCT-based scheme JPEG has used since 1992, so a HEIC photo typically takes up roughly half the storage of a JPEG at similar visual quality. On a phone with finite storage and cameras taking ever-larger photos, that's not a marginal saving; it can be the difference between fitting a library on the device or not.
HEIC also stores things JPEG structurally cannot: a proper alpha channel for transparency, a wider colour and brightness range useful for HDR shots, and the depth and motion data behind features like Portrait mode and Live Photos. JPEG, designed in an era before any of that existed, has none of it.
The sharing-compatibility trap
The catch is reach. HEVC is patent-encumbered: decoding it legally means licensing patents from one of several pools, and plenty of software and hardware makers have simply not bothered to add support, especially outside Apple's own platforms. The result is a familiar trap: a photo looks completely normal on the iPhone that took it, then hits a wall the moment it goes anywhere else. Upload forms reject it, older photo editors don't recognise it, some social platforms mishandle it, and it can land in an inbox as an attachment the recipient can't open at all.
Windows is the clearest example. File Explorer and the Photos app can't decode HEIC out of the box; you need two separate Microsoft Store apps (one for the HEIF container, one for the actual HEVC decoding) before a thumbnail even appears, and the HEVC piece often carries a small licensing fee unless the PC manufacturer pre-licensed it. JPEG has never had that problem: it opens on Windows, macOS, Linux, every browser and virtually every device made in the last thirty years, with nothing to install.
Where JPEG's universality actually wins
The practical cases where this matters are specific and common: emailing a photo to someone whose software you can't check, uploading to a form or marketplace that might reject an unfamiliar format, sending a file to a print shop (professional printing workflows are built around JPEG and TIFF, not HEIC), or simply wanting a photo you can open in a decade regardless of what software still exists by then. In every one of those situations, HEIC's smaller size stops mattering the moment the file won't open at all.
Workflows that avoid the problem entirely
There are three ways to deal with this, and which one makes sense depends on how often you hit it. If it's a recurring problem, switch the camera itself: Settings → Camera → Formats → "Most Compatible" makes the iPhone shoot JPEG (and H.264 video) going forward, trading some storage space for zero compatibility issues from then on. It only affects photos taken after the setting changes. If photos are transferring to a Mac or PC and need converting automatically, Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → "Automatic" does that during the transfer itself, without changing what the camera shoots.
