Medium-format origins

3FR comes from sensors substantially larger than full-frame, the medium-format chips found in Hasselblad’s H and X system cameras and digital backs. That larger sensor is the whole point: it yields enormous resolution, fine tonal gradation and the rendering prized in studio, fashion and landscape work. The files are correspondingly big and demanding, and the system sits firmly at the professional end of the market. This is a format you encounter in deliberate, high-value capture rather than casual shooting.

Phocus and the FFF workflow

Hasselblad designed 3FR to be processed in Phocus, its own software, which applies the company’s colour science — the Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution — and lens corrections. In a typical professional workflow the 3FR is converted to FFF, Hasselblad’s flexible processing format, as part of importing into Phocus. Third-party editors such as Lightroom and Capture One do read 3FR, though many photographers stay within Phocus to get Hasselblad’s intended rendering. The tight coupling to first-party software is a distinguishing feature of the format.

Even with medium-format data, a 3FR’s raw sensor values cannot be viewed directly, so the file embeds a full-size JPEG the camera produced.
