Bit depth and compression choices
One thing that sets NEF apart is how much it exposes to the photographer about how the file is written. Many Nikon bodies let you choose 12-bit or 14-bit recording, trading file size against tonal gradation, and offer lossless compressed, compressed (lossy) and in some cases uncompressed options. The lossless compressed setting is the usual sweet spot, shrinking files with no quality penalty. These choices mean two NEF files from the same camera can differ noticeably in size and editing headroom.
NEF and the Nikon workflow
Nikon provides NX Studio (the successor to Capture NX-D and ViewNX) free of charge to develop NEF files, and it reads Nikon’s in-camera Picture Controls faithfully. Edits are often stored alongside the original rather than baked in, and NEF integrates cleanly with sidecar-style non-destructive workflows in third-party editors. Because Nikon has used the NEF extension for so long, the internal structure has evolved across generations, which is why very old and very new NEFs occasionally need different software versions. Most current raw editors keep pace with new Nikon bodies fairly quickly.
