What is a Adobe DNG file?

The standard that tries to unify the rest

Where CR2, NEF, ARW and the others are each tied to one manufacturer, DNG was designed to be the common denominator. Adobe published the specification openly, and the free Adobe DNG Converter can turn most proprietary raws into DNG, folding the sensor data and standardised metadata into a single TIFF-based file. The appeal is longevity: because the format is documented, a DNG should remain readable long after a niche proprietary decoder has been abandoned. That archival argument is the main reason photographers adopt it.

Who shoots DNG natively

DNG is not only a conversion target. Leica uses it as a native raw format, Pentax and Ricoh offer it as an in-camera option, and a great many smartphones and drones record DNG directly because it spares them inventing their own format. This dual life — both a destination and an origin — is what makes DNG unusual among raw formats. It can also embed the original proprietary raw inside itself, so you need not discard the maker file when converting. The trade-off is that converting away from a maker format can drop some manufacturer-specific maker-note data.
