What is a Olympus ORF file?

Micro Four Thirds context

ORF files come from a sensor roughly a quarter the area of full-frame, which keeps the bodies and lenses compact and the files relatively modest in size. The smaller sensor means a different balance of depth of field and high-ISO behaviour compared with larger formats, and the raw data reflects that. Olympus, and now OM System, built a strong reputation around portability, so ORF is the format of choice for photographers who value a light kit. None of this changes how you develop the raw, but it does explain the system’s character.

Stabilisation and high-res modes

Olympus pioneered exceptionally effective in-body image stabilisation, and several bodies offer a High Res Shot mode that combines multiple exposures, shifting the sensor between frames, into a single much higher-resolution raw. These multi-shot ORF files are larger and encode data the camera assembled computationally, which not every converter handles identically. Live ND and focus-stacking features similarly extend what the system captures. Support for the special modes is the main place ORF compatibility can get fiddly.

Why is my High Res Shot ORF so large?
High Res Shot combines several sensor-shifted exposures into one much higher-resolution raw, so the file is bigger than a normal ORF. Make sure your editor specifically supports the mode for best results.
Does the smaller sensor make ORF raw less useful?
No — ORF gives the same kind of editing latitude as any raw; the sensor size mainly affects noise and depth of field, not whether the raw is worth shooting. You still gain far more flexibility than from a JPEG.
