Where CR2 came from
Canon introduced CR2 with the EOS-1D Mark II in 2004, replacing the older CRW format. Structurally it leans on the TIFF/EXIF specification, with the sensor data and a stack of metadata held in a layout that many third-party tools learned to read over the years. Because it was so widely adopted across the Rebel, EOS xxD, 5D and 1D lines, CR2 became one of the best-supported raw formats in existence. That long reign is exactly why so many photo libraries are full of CR2 files today.
The CR3 transition
The most common surprise for Canon owners is discovering that a newer camera produces CR3, not CR2. Canon switched to CR3 from 2018 onward, beginning with DIGIC 8 bodies such as the EOS M50, and CR3 is a different container entirely (based on the ISO Base Media format). If your software opens CR2 but not the files from a recent EOS R-series body, that is the CR3 difference at work. The two formats are not interchangeable, so older converters often need updating to handle CR3.
