What is a Fuji RAF file?

RAF (Fujifilm Raw) is the raw format used by Fujifilm’s cameras, most notably the X-series. Its defining trait is that many of these sensors use the X-Trans colour filter array rather than the conventional Bayer pattern, which shapes how the file must be processed.

X-Trans and why it matters

Most cameras use a Bayer colour filter array, but Fujifilm’s X-Trans sensors arrange red, green and blue photosites in a larger, more randomised 6×6 pattern intended to reduce moiré without a low-pass filter. The benefit is crisp detail; the historical cost was that early third-party converters struggled to demosaic X-Trans cleanly, sometimes smearing fine foliage or producing waxy textures. Software has improved enormously since then, but X-Trans RAF files can still render slightly differently between editors. This is the single biggest thing that distinguishes RAF from a Bayer-based raw.

Film simulations and the Fuji look

Fujifilm leans heavily on its film-simulation modes — Provia, Velvia, Classic Chrome, Acros and others — which are baked into the JPEG and stored as metadata in the RAF. Some converters can read and approximate these simulations, while others ignore them, so the same RAF can look quite different depending on the tool. Fujifilm’s own software and Capture One have historically handled the Fuji rendering well. If the film-simulation look matters to you, it is worth checking how your editor interprets RAF.

Morphr and RAF previews

A RAF stores the raw X-Trans sensor data, which no viewer can display directly, alongside a full-size JPEG the camera produced — often already carrying your chosen film simulation. Morphr extracts that embedded JPEG and saves it as a JPEG or PNG in your browser, keeping everything local. Because it lifts the preview rather than demosaicing the X-Trans data, you get the camera’s rendering, film simulation included, not a fresh development. To work the raw properly you would still use Capture One, Lightroom or Fujifilm’s software.

Fuji RAF FAQ

Can I edit a RAF as much as a raw from Lightroom?
Yes — a RAF holds full raw sensor data, so it offers the same broad latitude as any other raw, though X-Trans files reward an editor that demosaics them well, such as Capture One or Lightroom. Morphr, by contrast, only extracts the preview rather than editing the raw.
Why does my RAF look different in different software?
Two reasons: editors demosaic the X-Trans pattern differently, and they vary in how faithfully they reproduce Fujifilm film simulations. The same file can therefore look distinct from one tool to the next.
Will Morphr keep my Fujifilm film simulation?
The embedded preview was rendered in-camera with your selected simulation, so the JPEG or PNG Morphr extracts reflects that look. It is the camera’s rendering, not a re-developed raw.
